Tasmanian Native Hen Gallinula mortierii

 

 

These flightless birds are found only in Tasmania and are twice the size of the Black-tailed Native Hen found on  mainland Australia.They are often seen on open grassy areas along creeks and swamps from sea level to 100m. They run swiftly, flicking their tail when disturbed. They usually live in pairs or family groups in strictly guarded territories.Nests in low grass near water from June to January. Swamphen sized. Bill Yellow. Iris ruby red ( see picture above). White patch on flank. Juveniles are paler.Native hens can be seen on most riverside farmland throughout the state. The Derwent, Tamar, North Esk and South Esk rivers are great places to start. Sightings are guaranteed on Maria Island where a large introduced population has been established. They'll meet you at the ferry!
